Rescuing one cat won’t save the world but it will save the world for one cat.
March 2nd is Cat Rescue Day. A day to highlight the thousands of cats in shelters, on the streets, or in desperate need of a second chance. Research published in the journal Scientific Reports calculated there to be nearly a quarter of a million stray cats living in the UK – an average of 9.3 stray cats per square kilometre.
1. Adopt, Don’t Shop
Rescues are overflowing. If you’re looking for a feline companion, adopting from a shelter gives a homeless cat a fresh start. Many rescues are already microchipped, vaccinated, and neutered, making it a hassle-free process. Plus, you’ll be saving a life.
If adoption isn’t an option? Foster. Even a temporary home can give a stressed cat the space and care they need to find a forever family.
2. Support Local Rescues
Not everyone can adopt. But you can still help. Donate money, food, or supplies like litter and blankets. Even better—offer your time. Many shelters need volunteers for feeding, cleaning, or socialising cats. A little effort can make a world of difference.
3. Microchip and Neuter—It’s Non-Negotiable
Lost cats can’t call home. But a microchip ensures they stand a much better chance of being reunited with their keepers. Make sure your rescue cat is microchipped and registered correctly into your details. Microchipping is essential—it’s the single most effective way to ensure lost cats find their way back home. Many unchipped cats end up in shelters, with no way of identifying their keepers. A microchip provides permanent, tamper-proof identification and is a must for all responsible cat keepers.
Neutering is equally critical. According to Cats Protection: one unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce over 20,000 kittens in just five years. Overpopulation leads to more cats in shelters and on the streets. Spay and neuter programs reduce suffering—plain and simple.
4. Spread the Word
Use your voice. Social media is a powerful tool. Share adoption stories, highlight rescue centres, or post about cats looking for homes. Sometimes, one post is all it takes to connect a cat with its perfect human.
5. Help Street Cats
Stray and feral cats often struggle to survive. If you see one in need, contact a local rescue or Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program. Providing food, shelter, and medical care can change their lives dramatically.
Every Action Counts
Cat Rescue Day isn’t just about awareness. It’s about action. Whether you adopt, foster, donate, or simply spread the word, you have the power to help. One cat at a time. One life at a time. And that? That changes everything.
So, what will you do this Cat Rescue Day?
